CNIT (Italian National Inter-Universitary Consortium for Telecommunications) is a non-profit association established in 1995, bringing together 42 public Italian universities, whose main purpose is to foster research activity and provide networking support to specific projects in the field of Information and Communication Technology.

The innovation and technology transfer of research results towards end-users and industry is a primary mission. CNIT also promotes the collaboration between member universities and other educational institutes, as well as technical and scientific collaborations with national and international research institutes and industries.

In the 5G-STARDUST Project, CNIT participates with two Research Units: University of Bologna and University of Parma.

What is your organization’s role in the project? What unique contribution does it bring to the team?

CNIT will bring its significant expertise on multiple aspects related to Non-Terrestrial Networks, including, among the others: physical layer and advanced signal processing techniques (such as Multiple-Input Multiple-Output schemes and Mobile Edge Computing), architectures and protocols, air interfaces and waveform (including Orthogonal Time Frequency Space), and standardisation and regulation aspects.

Why is this project important for your organization?

Active participation in 5G NTN projects such as 5G-STADUST keeps CNIT at the forefront of research advancements in the telecommunications field. By collaborating with industry players, such as satellite and terrestrial network operators, equipment manufacturers, and technology providers, CNIT will gain the means to: i) identify and develop new research areas; ii) enrich the teaching material, thus increasing the employability of the involved Research Units graduates; and iii) provide knowledge transfer toward local, national, and European companies thus contributing to the competitiveness of the European industry and SMEs in a developing sector as that of Terrestrial and Satellite integrations for 5G and beyond systems.

Who are the key people involved?

The main people involved in the 5G-STARDUST Project from CNIT are: Prof. Alessandro Vanelli-Coralli, Prof. Alessandro Guidotti, and Prof. Daniele Tarchi from the University of Bologna, and Prof. Giulio Colavolpe, Prof. Tommaso Foggi, Prof. Amina Piemontese, Prof. Alessandro Ugolini, and Prof. Armando Vannucci from the University of Parma.
